(the) studio

At the core of (the) coordination lab is a simple idea: lasting change happens when networks, coalitions, and collaborations are well coordinated.

Across communities, people are doing this work every day. They are aligning partners, navigating complexity, holding relationships together, and moving collective efforts forward. It is essential work, and it is often done without a clear place to learn, reflect, or grow alongside others doing the same.

Coordination can be a lonely place.

(the) studio exists to change that.

It is a gathering place for those leading and supporting collaborative efforts — a space to deepen understanding of what it takes to make collaboration work. Here, experience is shared, ideas are sharpened, and the practice of coordination grows stronger over time.

This is not separate from the work. It is built from it and extends beyond it.

(the) studio is open to those who are leading, supporting, or investing in collaborative work. It is a place to share experience, explore new ideas, and strengthen the practice of coordination together.

About (the) studio

  • In many communities, collaboration is seen as a value or an aspiration. Less often is it treated as a discipline that can be learned, practiced, and refined.

(the) studio is grounded in the belief that collaboration is a core capability and that strengthening it is one of the most important ways to address complex social challenges.

By bringing together insights from active coalitions, emerging innovations, and leaders across sectors, it helps make the invisible work of coordination more visible and more accessible. It creates space to explore not just what is being done, but how and why it works.

This includes work across areas like healthspan, resilience, sustainability, workforce, and community connection. Each reflects a different part of the system, but all depend on the ability of people and organizations to work together in aligned and sustained ways.

  • There is no shortage of innovation happening across the country. What is often missing is connection.

(the) studio serves as a place where ideas can travel. It brings together lessons from different communities and contexts, helping to identify patterns, surface emerging practices, and translate insight into approaches others can adapt.

In doing so, it reduces the need for each community to start from scratch and helps accelerate progress by building from what is already working.

    Learning in Practice

The work of (the) studio takes shape through writing, conversation, and shared experience.

It captures insights through papers, case studies, and perspectives that reflect real-world application. It creates opportunities for people to come together in dialogue, to test ideas, and to learn from one another. It extends into speaking and facilitated sessions that bring these insights directly into the work of communities and organizations.

This is a continuous cycle of learning. Practice informs insight, and insight strengthens practice.

  • Complex challenges are not solved by individual organizations acting alone. They are solved through coordinated effort across systems.

Yet the ability to coordinate effectively is rarely supported in a sustained way.

(the) studio helps fill that gap by creating a shared space for those doing this work to learn, grow, and connect. It strengthens the field of collaboration itself, making it more intentional, more supported, and more capable of driving lasting change.
